Nearly 100 Illinois Cattlemen visit Slykhuis Beef Barn
Nearly 100 Illinois beef producers toured Todd Slykhuis’ monoslope beef barn constructed by Summit Livestock Facilities. The tour took place on Wednesday June 26th near Raleigh Illinois. The tour was part of the 2013 Illinois Beef Association Summer Conference held in Rend Lake Resort in Southern Illinois.
During the visit Todd briefly addressed his guests explaining that the Slykhuis operation includes a 350 head cow-calf operation and a new 299 head indoor cattle-feeding facility.
According to Todd the decision to expand his operation from a cow-calf to a combination cow-calf and cattle-feeding business was motivated by current cattle feeding economic trends as well as some farm-specific economics.
Slykhuis further explained “As the economies of production changed in our area we came to realize that we just weren't getting enough financial return from the investment that we have been making in genetics. So we started looking at the possibility of feeding some of our cattle ourselves . . . and today we’re very pleased with the cattle performance we are seeing in our new Summit beef barn.”
