A perfect “Steer Day” at the Larry and Dan O’Hern Farm
It was a breezy 55-degree day . . . perfect if you're a bovine . . . and not bad for people either – Especially if those people were among the bus load of Illinois Beef Association Young Producer Council members who visited the Summit monoslope beef barn of Larry O’Hern near Vermont Illinois on Saturday October 27.
Dan O’Hern did a great job leading the group on the tour and explaining how he and his father Larry plan to use their new beef barn to optimize feeding efficiency and grow their cattle feeding business. The new Summit PacSlat Optimizer manure storage system in this barn drew lots of questions and interest.
This new idea includes two deep bed pack areas on either side of a slat-over-pit manure storage system. The PacSlat Optimizer promises to provide the required manure capacity and improve labor efficiency as the goal is to only empty the 12-foot deep pit once each year.
We truly appreciated the fantastic job Sara Prescott did with organizing the event. And we welcomed the opportunity to put “faces with names” as we met the new Illinois Beef Association Director of Communications Jill Johnson as well as the recently appointed Executive President of the Illinois Beef Association Reid Blossom.
In addition it was a pleasure to meet Travis Meteer Extension Educator Commercial Agriculture – Beef University of Illinois who was also among those on the tour.
